Thursday Night DJ Playlist

I was all over the freaking place this Thursday. But that's the crowd, too, so many different styles and tastes, hard to please everyone and I do try to please the people. But I usually end up just pleasing myself and DJ On-Call. She likes good stuff, too.
Click on the extended text to check out my playlist from Thursday, Feb. 22 from 10pm-2:30am.
You may even get an extra surprise, for reading to the end ....

Beyond Beats and Rhymes

I'm so excited, I'm watching one of the most interesting modern documentaries I've seen in a while on PBS as I type. Byron Hurt's Beyond Beats and Rhymes: Masculinity in Hip-Hop Culture and he is coming to Champaign on March 13th, 2007 at 7pm in Kinight Auditorium, Spurlock Museum for a free viewing of the film and town hall meeting with Byron.

For more info.

• Some of the interview highlights in the film are the clips with Chuck D, who also writes on the Public Enemy site in his blog, The Terrordome. That Dr. Michael Eric Dyson is a riveting speaker in the film, and Dr. William Jelani Cobb has written some books both you and I should read. I'm buying my copy of The Devil & Dave Chappelle right now.

• Check out the PBS site for showing times of this documentary in your area.

Get Your Art Together

I'll be DJing the opening night of the 2007 GCAP Artists Against Aids event, so be sure to come out for free appetizers, drinks, great tunes, and the opportunity to buy some amazing work from local artists. The event helps fund an important service to our community! And all you artists out there, you have about two months left to get your work together. There are download forms for submissions on GCAP's website.
